What UTM parameters should a food brand use for Instagram?

Use the standard tags: utm_source=ig, with utm_medium=social for unpaid links and paid_social for ads. For a food or drink brand, the work is giving recipes, creators and giveaways their own utm_content, and keeping shop out of campaign names.

Run the numbers for your store: the free UTM builder.

If you sell food or drink, use the same Instagram tags as any store: utm_source=ig, with utm_medium=social for unpaid links and paid_social for ads. What changes is how many links you tag. Recipe Reels, creator posts and giveaways each need their own utm_content, and campaign names should usually skip the word shop.

If you sell food and beverage

If you sell coffee, snacks or sauces, Instagram may be where people first see the product in use. A recipe Reel, a creator's unboxing and a giveaway can all send people to your store. Each deserves its own label, or they blur into one Instagram row.

Food also sells on repeat. If a bag of coffee runs out every few weeks, the second order may start from a reorder email or a typed address. Instagram did the introducing, and another channel collects the credit for the refill.

If cafes or supermarkets stock you, some of your Instagram fans buy there instead. No tag can follow them down an aisle. That is a limit of UTM parameters, not of your setup.

Seasons add campaigns, too. Gift boxes before the holidays and cold drinks in a heatwave are separate pushes. Give each one its own campaign name, so next year's version does not blur into this one.

What one store's data shows

One store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026. It holds shares of revenue only: no ad spend, no order counts.

What the export showsShare of revenueSource cell
Journeys with 1 touch (0.5 days to buy)79.5%Journeys sheet, 1 touch row
Journeys with 2 or more touches20.6%Journeys sheet, 2 to 3, 4 to 9 and 10+ rows added
Journeys with 10+ touches (16.0 days to buy)3.0%Journeys sheet, 10+ touches row

The export does not say what Store A sells, so read it as one store's pattern. It is not a benchmark for food brands. On the Journeys sheet, journeys with 1 touch hold 79.5% of revenue, and those buyers took 0.5 days. Journeys of 2 or more touches add up to 20.6% on the Journeys sheet: 12.2% + 5.4% + 3.0%.

Those longer journeys are also the varied ones. They make up 3,656 of the 3,670 distinct path sequences in the export: many routes, a small share of revenue. On the Journeys sheet, the 10+ touch journeys took 16.0 days.

If you sell food and your own export looks like this, the quick one-touch buys are where a single tag decides everything. One tap from a recipe story, one label. The long, varied paths are where creators, giveaways and reorder emails mix, and only consistent tags keep them apart. The export cannot show which links carried tags; your Traffic acquisition report can.

What changes for a food and beverage brand?

  • Recipes. Give each recipe its own utm_content, such as recipe_cold_brew, on the bio or story link that goes with it. Then GA4 shows which recipe sent visits, not only that Instagram did.
  • Creators and collabs. Keep utm_source=ig and put the creator's handle in utm_content. If you pay per sale, a medium of affiliate puts those visits in GA4's Affiliates channel. Shopify's help suggests one shareable link per influencer.
  • Giveaways. Name the campaign after the giveaway, such as giveaway_spring. Otherwise a burst of entries inflates whichever campaign happened to be running.
  • Shop in the name. Names like coffee_shop_week, farm_shop_box and bakeshop_drop all match GA4's Shopping rule for campaign names. Use coffee_week instead, and the visits stay in Social.
  • Instagram Shopping. If GA4 shows IGShopping as a source, its source list files that as a shopping site. Those visits sit in a Shopping channel, usually Organic Shopping, so count them when you total Instagram.
  • Stockists. A tag only labels visits to your own site. A jar sold on a supermarket shelf never reaches GA4, whatever the post said.

What to do this week

  1. Look for IGShopping in GA4. Open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition and set the table to Session source / medium. Then type IGShopping into the search bar. Pass: no rows, or rows you already count as Instagram. Fail: rows you never added to your Instagram total.
  2. Tag your next recipe link and read it back. Use utm_source=ig, utm_medium=social, your campaign and utm_content set to the recipe. Next day, open Traffic acquisition and add Session manual ad content as a secondary dimension. Pass: the recipe has its own row. Fail: no row, so the tags fell off on the way.
  3. Give your next creator a Shopify link. From your Shopify admin, go to Growth > Campaigns and open the campaign. Add a shareable link with the creator's handle in its UTM parameters. Pass: once the Data sync in progress badge clears, the report shows sessions. Fail: nothing, so the creator posted an old link.

Frequently asked questions

  • How should I tag a recipe Reel?
Tag the link you send people to from the Reel, such as your bio link or a story link. Give each recipe its own utm_content value, like recipe_cold_brew, so GA4 shows which recipe sent the visit instead of one Instagram row.
  • How do I tag a giveaway run with another brand?
Give your partner their own link: utm_source=ig, utm_medium=social, a campaign named after the giveaway and utm_content set to their handle. Their entries then stay apart from your own posts, and you can compare partners when it ends.
  • Can UTM parameters track sales in shops that stock my products?
No. UTM parameters only label visits to your own website, so a fan who buys your product in a supermarket never reaches GA4. To see that effect, compare stockist sales in weeks with and without an Instagram push, or ask the stockist for their numbers.
