What unpaid attribution debt costs a DTC brand
You can estimate the annual cost today from three numbers you already hold. Then there are the two costs that never appear in the arithmetic.

You can estimate the annual cost from three numbers you already hold, and then there are two costs that never appear in the arithmetic.
The arithmetic
| Input | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Annual ad spend | Your accounts |
| Claim ratio | Platform-claimed revenue divided by actual revenue, one window |
| Share of spend on proximity-credited channels | Branded search, retargeting, and similar |
Multiply annual spend by the proximity share, then apply a conservative correction implied by your claim ratio.
The claim ratio method is in the claim ratio, and a starting calculator is at the wasted ad spend calculator.
The first cost that is not in the arithmetic
The channels you cut that were working. Upstream channels create demand that shows up as other channels' credit, so they look inefficient under proximity-based reporting and get cut in the next review. The revenue then declines gradually somewhere else and nobody connects the two.
That cost is real, invisible, and impossible to estimate retrospectively, which is precisely why it persists.
The second
Slower learning. A brand whose measurement is unreliable cannot tell whether its decisions worked, so it cannot improve its judgement. Two brands making the same number of decisions per year will diverge sharply if one can check its results and the other cannot.
Over a few years that compounds into a capability gap that has nothing to do with budget size.
What paying it down costs
A €99 one-time read on a Google Analytics export returns a per-channel estimate with its confidence interval, coverage share and design label, refundable within 30 days, no questions asked, with nothing installed on your store.
The honest counter-case
If your spend per channel is small enough that nothing resolves, a read will say so and the right answer is to wait.
The one line worth running this week
Annual spend, claim ratio, proximity share. Three numbers, twenty minutes, and it turns a vague discomfort into a figure you can put next to a price.

Frequently asked questions
How do I estimate the cost of attribution debt?
Multiply annual ad spend by the share going to proximity-credited channels, then apply a conservative correction implied by your claim ratio. What costs do not show up in that arithmetic?
The upstream channels you cut that were working, whose contribution appeared as other channels' credit; and slower learning, because a brand that cannot check whether its decisions worked cannot improve its judgement. When is doing nothing the right answer?
When spend per channel is too small for any method to separate an effect from ordinary variation. A read will tell you that, and waiting until the spend supports measurement is a legitimate decision rather than a failure.

- Attribution DebtAttribution debt is the gap between what your ad platforms claim drove revenue and what actually caused it, carried quarter after quarter into the budget. It is how marketing debt accrues: allocate on claimed conversions long enough and the plan itself becomes the liability.
- Attribution ReportAttribution Report shows which touchpoints or channels receive credit for a conversion. It identifies which campaigns drive desired actions.
- Confidence IntervalConfidence Interval is a statistical range of values that likely contains the true value of a metric. In marketing analytics, it quantifies uncertainty around estimates, indicating the precision of an outcome or causal effect.

- Marketing AttributionMarketing attribution assigns credit to marketing touchpoints that contribute to a conversion or sale. Causal inference enhances attribution models by identifying true cause-effect relationships.
- RetargetingRetargeting is online advertising that targets users who have previously interacted with your website or content. Attribution analysis shows the causal role of retargeting in driving conversions and improving ad spend.
