How do I track sales from YouTube videos?
Tag the links in your video descriptions with UTM parameters, and link Google Ads to GA4 if you run YouTube ads. Then expect a gap. GA4 records visits, not views, so a viewer who watched and later typed your address shows up as Direct.

You usually track YouTube sales with tagged links. Put UTM parameters on every link in your video descriptions, so GA4 and Shopify can name the video. If you run YouTube ads, link Google Ads to GA4 so engaged views count too. Both still miss viewers who watched, then searched or typed your address.
That is the standard answer, and it handles the click well. Tag a link with utm_source=youtube and utm_medium=video, and GA4 files the visit under Organic Video. Google defines that channel as visits from non-ad links on video sites like YouTube, TikTok or Vimeo. Clicks on Google Ads Video campaigns land in Paid Video instead.
The trouble sits in the word click. YouTube sells by being watched, and a viewer can finish a whole review without tapping anything. GA4 counts visits to your store. A view on YouTube is not a visit.
What one store's data shows
One store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026. It holds shares of revenue only: no ad spend, no order counts.
| What the export shows | Share of revenue | Source cell |
|---|---|---|
| Organic Video, in last click, first click and touched views | 0.0% | Channels sheet, Organic Video row |
| Direct, in all three views | 57.7% | Channels sheet, Direct row |
| Journeys with 1 touch (0.5 days to buy) | 79.5% | Journeys sheet, 1 touch row |
| Journeys with 2 to 3 touches (12.5 days to buy) | 12.2% | Journeys sheet, 2 to 3 touches row |
Start with the zero. Organic Video holds 0.0% of revenue on the Channels sheet in every view, the generous touched view included. So buying journeys with a visit GA4 filed under Organic Video round to nothing in this export.
That is a statement about clicks, not about views. Nothing in the file says whether this shop ever posted a video. It only says that visits GA4 could trace to a video site carried next to none of the revenue.
Now the fast lane. On the Journeys sheet, journeys with 1 touch hold 79.5% of revenue and took 0.5 days to buy. On paper, these buyers arrived once and bought within a day.
A viewer who watched a review last week, then typed the shop's name, looks exactly like that. Those days count from the first touch GA4 recorded. A video watched before it never reaches the clock.
Direct holds 57.7% of revenue on the Channels sheet. GA4 uses Direct for a saved link or a typed address, which is where a viewer who typed your address would land.
When GA4 does see more than one visit, buying slows down. Journeys with 2 to 3 touches hold 12.2% of revenue on the Journeys sheet and took 12.5 days to buy. So a read taken the day after a video goes live is a very early read.
What the export cannot show is how many of those quick or direct buyers had watched a video first. It has rows for visits and none for views.
Why does the usual answer miss YouTube buyers?
A view leaves no trace in GA4. GA4 records visits. Its attribution can credit an engaged view of a YouTube ad, which reaches it through Google Ads. Organic views are not reported in Google Ads either, so an unpaid video's audience stays invisible until someone clicks.
Many viewers have no link to tap. YouTube makes URLs in Shorts descriptions and comments non-clickable, to cut spam and scams. Links in long-form descriptions only work once a channel has access to advanced features. End screen links to your site need the YouTube Partner Program.
Some buyers never load your store. In the United States, YouTube Shopping lets eligible stores sell through an in-app checkout. That order lands in your Shopify admin with no store visit for GA4 to record. Elsewhere, tapping a product opens your store in the browser, where your tags and GA4 can see it.
Google disagrees with itself. Google Ads counts an engaged view after at least 10 seconds of a skippable ad. A purchase inside the window then counts as an engaged-view conversion. GA4's attribution help still describes an engaged view as 30 seconds of watching. Compare each number with its own definition, not with each other.
Shopify forgets slow viewers. Shopify's marketing reports reset a visitor's first interaction if they buy nothing within 30 days of a session. A viewer who clicked in March and bought in May no longer counts the video as their first touch. Its marketing reports also cover Online Store channel orders only, so an in-app YouTube order sits outside them.
What can YouTube tracking not tell you?
Whether the video caused the sale. A tagged click shows which door a buyer used. It cannot say whether they were coming anyway, like a loyal customer who watches every upload.
Engaged-view conversions share that gap. Google Ads counts the purchase when a viewer watched and later bought inside the window. The count does not check whether the purchase needed the ad.
For that question, Google offers Conversion Lift. It splits your audience into people who see your ads and people who don't, then compares their purchases. It isn't open to every account, and you ask your Google account representative for it.
For unpaid videos, a rough check costs nothing. Compare the two weeks after a video goes live with the two weeks before, on Direct and Organic Search. If both rise and nothing else changed, the video probably did more than its tags show.
What to do this week
- Tag the description link on your most-watched video. In YouTube Studio, select Content, click the video and edit its Description. Use utm_source=youtube, utm_medium=video and the video's name in utm_campaign. Pass: once the data is in, your test visit shows under Organic Video in Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition. Fail: it shows as Direct, so something stripped the tags.
- Find your YouTube ad clicks in GA4. In the same report, look for the Paid Video and Cross-network rows. Pass: your Video campaigns sit under Paid Video, and Demand Gen under Cross-network. Fail: no Google Ads traffic at all, so check Admin > Product links > Google Ads links.
- Split YouTube conversions by how they happened. In Google Ads, open the campaign table and click Segment, then Conversions, then Ad event type. Pass: you can see click conversions and engaged-view conversions apart. Fail: nearly all are engaged views, so treat the total as a lead to test, not a result.
Check the homework. Your GA4 Attribution paths export already holds the evidence. Causality Engine reads that one file and shows what each channel caused next to what last-click gave it, in 1 to 2 minutes, for €99 once (excluding VAT), refundable within 30 days. Check the homework

Frequently asked questions
Do YouTube views show up in GA4?
Only some. GA4 records visits to your store, so an organic view without a click leaves no trace. Engaged views of your YouTube ads can count in GA4's attribution, through your Google Ads link. Google Ads does not report organic views either. Can a YouTube Short send buyers to my store?
Not with a typed URL. YouTube makes links in Shorts descriptions and comments non-clickable. A Short can point to one of your long videos as its related video, and that video's description can carry your tagged link.Do engaged-view conversions mean my YouTube ad worked?
Not on their own. Google Ads counts a purchase when a viewer watched part of a skippable ad and bought within the window. The count does not check whether they would have bought anyway. A lift test, which compares viewers with a held-out group, answers that.
