How do I see which channel drives fashion sales in GA4?

If you sell clothing, Traffic acquisition shows the channel that closed each sale and attribution paths show the browsing before it. Tag social ads with a paid medium so GA4 files them as Paid Social, and check GA4 revenue against Shopify net sales for returns.

If you sell clothing, start with Traffic acquisition for the channel that closed each sale and attribution paths for the browsing before it. Then correct for two fashion habits. Discovery often starts on social or video, which GA4 may file under another channel. Returns can inflate a channel's revenue.

If you sell fashion or apparel

If you sell clothes, a buyer may see a piece in a feed or a video and browse a few times. They may wait for their size or a sale, then buy. The channel that started it may not be the one that closed it. Launch emails and drops add rushes of visits that only tags can sort.

Returns are the other habit. If buyers order two sizes and send one back, the purchase GA4 records is bigger than the sale you keep. GA4's Total revenue subtracts refunds, but only the refunds it receives.

What one store's data shows

One store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026. It holds shares of revenue only: no ad spend, no order counts. Nothing in it says the store sells fashion, so treat it as one store, not a benchmark for apparel.

What the export showsValueSource cell
Paid Social, in all three views0.0% of revenueChannels sheet, Paid Social row
Organic Video, in all three views0.0% of revenueChannels sheet, Organic Video row
Direct, in last click, first click and touched views57.7% of revenueChannels sheet, Direct row
Journeys with four to nine touches (16.9 days to buy)5.4% of revenueJourneys sheet, row for four to nine touches

Read the two zeros first. Paid Social and Organic Video hold 0.0% of revenue in last click, first click and touched alike (Channels sheet). For a clothing brand, those can be the channels where buyers first see you.

Two readings fit, and the export cannot pick between them. Either this store did not use those channels, or their visits reached GA4 under another name.

GA4 is strict about names. Outside Google Ads, it files a visit under Paid Social only with a social source and a paid-looking medium, such as cpc. Organic Video needs a video site as the source, or a medium that contains the word video. Google also lists social media among the sources of Direct, and Direct holds 57.7% of revenue in every view here (Channels sheet).

The slow row is the one to set against your own. Journeys with four to nine touches held 5.4% of revenue and took 16.9 days to buy (Journeys sheet). If your buyers browse, wait for a size and come back, your own paths may look like that.

What the export cannot show is returns. It holds revenue shares as GA4 recorded them, so it says nothing about what this store kept after returns.

What changes for a fashion store?

Tag social and creator links as if your budget depends on it, because it does. Google advises one source value per platform and lowercase names, since GA4 treats Meta and meta as different values. Give paid links a paid medium so they land in Paid Social.

Judge channels on kept revenue. Shopify's net sales take off discounts and sales reversals. If GA4's revenue runs well above Shopify's net sales for the same dates, check that refunds reach GA4 before you trust its channel totals.

Give launches time. Read Days to key event in the attribution paths report before you judge a drop's channels. A buyer waiting for payday has not failed to convert yet.

What to do this week

  1. Give every social ad a paid medium. Add utm_source, utm_medium=paid_social and utm_campaign to each ad's destination URL. Pass: within a week, Traffic acquisition shows a Paid Social row with revenue. Fail: those clicks still land in Organic Social, Referral or Direct.
  2. Reconcile revenue with Shopify. In Shopify, go to Analytics, then Reports, filter the Category to Sales and open Total sales over time. Set last month's net sales beside GA4's Total revenue for the same dates. Pass: the gap is small and you can explain it. Fail: GA4 sits well above, so check whether refunds reach GA4.
  3. Time your verdicts. In GA4, open Advertising, then Attribution, then Attribution paths, and read Days to key event. Pass: you wait at least that long after a launch before judging its channels. Fail: you judge a drop's channels the morning after.

Check the homework. Your GA4 Attribution paths export already holds the evidence. Causality Engine reads that one file and shows what each channel caused next to what last-click gave it, in 1 to 2 minutes, for €99 once (excluding VAT), refundable within 30 days. Check the homework

Frequently asked questions

  • Do returns change which channel looks best in GA4?
They can. GA4's Total revenue subtracts refunds, but only the refunds it receives. If refunds never reach GA4, channels that drive returns look better than they are. Check GA4 against Shopify's net sales before you move budget.
  • Why do my social ad clicks show as Organic Social in GA4?
Because GA4 needs two things for Paid Social: a social site as the source and a paid medium, such as cpc. Without that medium, the click joins Organic Social. Add a paid medium to every social ad link.
  • How should a fashion store tag drops and launch emails?
Give each launch its own utm_campaign and keep utm_source and utm_medium the same across launches. Google advises lowercase values, since GA4 treats Meta and meta as different. Consistent names keep every drop in one row per channel.
