Why don't Meta ads show in GA4 for a pet store?

If you sell pet products, Meta ads usually disappear from GA4 in three places. Reorders come back by email, subscription or a typed address. Shoppers tap the ad on a phone and buy on a laptop. Gear takes days of comparing. GA4 then credits the visits it could read, not the ad that found the customer.

If you sell pet products

If you sell food, treats or litter, your best customers buy the same thing again and again. The Meta ad's real job was the first order. After that, reorders tend to arrive through a reminder email, a subscription or a bookmark, and GA4 credits the channel it can see.

GA4 does keep a memory, with limits. A bookmarked return in the same browser keeps the earlier source, because GA4 ignores direct visits when another source sits on the path. The lookback window for purchases defaults to 90 days, and it also governs session attribution. A Meta customer who reorders after that, or on a new device, shows up as Direct.

If you sell gear, such as a crate, a bed or a GPS collar, the buyer has homework. They measure the dog, read the size chart and come back later, often on another screen. A Meta tap on the sofa on Sunday can become a laptop order on Thursday. GA4 sees two strangers unless the shopper logs in.

And if you also sell on a marketplace, some shoppers your ad convinced will check out there. Your GA4 never sees those sales at all.

What one store's export shows

One store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026. It holds shares of revenue only: no ad spend, no order counts. The export does not say what that store sells, so read it for GA4's mechanics, not for pet shoppers.

What the export showsShare of revenueSource cell
Direct, in last click, first click and touched views57.7%Channels sheet, Direct row
Journeys with 2 to 3 touches (296 distinct paths, 12.5 days to buy)12.2%Journeys sheet, 2-3 touches row
Journeys with 4 to 9 touches (1,568 distinct paths, 16.9 days to buy)5.4%Journeys sheet, 4-9 touches row

On the Channels sheet, Direct holds 57.7% of revenue in all three views. In GA4, Direct only keeps a sale when no other source sits on the path. That makes it the home of the habitual buyer: the bookmark, the typed address, the phone GA4 never met before.

On the Journeys sheet, journeys with 2 to 3 touches hold 12.2% of revenue and take 12.5 days to buy. Journeys with 4 to 9 touches hold 5.4% on the Journeys sheet and take 16.9 days. That pace fits a considered purchase, like a crate bought after measuring the dog twice.

If a tagged Meta click opened one of those journeys, GA4's paths report would show Paid Social at the start. If the click arrived untagged, or on another device, the path starts somewhere else and Meta never appears in it.

The export holds no spend and no Meta figures, so it cannot say whether that store advertised on Meta. It is one store, not a benchmark for pet products.

What changes for a pet store?

  • Reorders need their own tags. Tag reminder emails and texts with a medium GA4 recognises, such as email or sms. Reorders then show as Email or SMS instead of blending into Direct.
  • Subscriptions may never reach GA4. If renewals charge a saved card without a store visit, GA4 has no session to credit. Check whether renewals appear in GA4 before you judge any channel on repeat revenue.
  • Gear ads need weeks, not days. The Key event attribution paths report shows Days to key event for your purchases. Read it before you call a gear campaign dead.
  • Phone-first discovery is normal. Meta's cross-device breakdown shows how often an ad seen on one device turns into a purchase on another. Those buyers will not look like Meta buyers in GA4 without a login.

What to do this week

  1. Tag your next reorder reminder and watch where it lands. Add utm_source and utm_medium=email to every link in the email. Pass: the reorders it brings show under Email in GA4's Traffic acquisition report. Fail: they still pile into Direct, so a link or a redirect lost the tag.
  2. Run Meta's device breakdown on your best gear ad. In Ads Manager, select the ad, click Breakdown, then choose Impression device under By delivery. In GA4's Traffic acquisition report, add Device category as a secondary dimension. Pass: both lean to the same device. Fail: Meta's results sit on phones while purchases sit on computers, so judge that ad on Shopify sales, not on GA4's Paid Social row.
  3. Read how long your purchases take. In GA4, click Advertising, then Key event attribution paths under the Key events dropdown, and select purchase. Pass: most paths close within a week. Fail: many take longer, so give gear campaigns at least that long before you judge them.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why do my pet food reorders show up as Direct in GA4?
Usually because the customer came back by bookmark or typed address, with no earlier source GA4 could use. GA4 only keeps an earlier source within its lookback window, 90 days by default for purchases, and only in the same browser. Tag your reminder emails so reorders show as Email.
  • Does GA4 see Meta ads that send shoppers to a marketplace?
No. GA4 on your store only records visits to your store. If a shopper sees your ad and buys your product on a marketplace instead, that sale never reaches your GA4. Use the marketplace's own reports to see whether those sales move with your Meta spend.
  • How long should a pet store wait before judging a Meta campaign in GA4?
At least as long as your buyers take. GA4's Key event attribution paths report shows Days to key event for each path. Food and treats may close fast while crates and beds can take weeks, so read your own report before you cut a campaign.
