What is first click attribution for a pet products store?
First click gives all the credit to the first channel a buyer interacted with. If you sell pet food or supplies, reorders matter. Shopify resets the first interaction after each order, while GA4's User acquisition keeps the original channel.

For a pet products store, first click attribution works the same way: all the credit goes to the first channel a buyer interacted with. If you sell food, litter or treats, reorders can carry much of your revenue. Shopify resets first click after each order, while GA4's first-user view keeps the original channel, so the two usually disagree.
If you sell pet products
If you sell pet food, litter, treats or flea care, the bowl empties on a schedule. A dog that likes the first bag may eat that brand for years. So the channel that made the introduction can be worth many orders, not one.
The introduction often happens off the record. A vet, a breeder, a groomer or a neighbour at the dog park recommends you, and none of that is a click. The first visit GA4 records may be a typed address or a brand search. First click then credits Direct or Organic Search for a tip it never saw.
Then come the reorders, and the two tools part ways. Shopify treats the next referrer after an order as the first interaction for the next order. GA4's User acquisition report keeps the channel that first acquired the user, as long as it still recognises them.
Here is one store's export. It is one store, and nothing in it says it sells pet products.
One store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026. It holds shares of revenue only: no ad spend, no order counts.
| What the export shows | Value | Source cell |
|---|---|---|
| Direct, in first click, last click and touched views | 57.7% of revenue | Channels sheet, Direct row |
| Journeys with 1 touch (0.5 days to buy) | 79.5% of revenue | Journeys sheet, 1 touch row |
| Break-even ROAS at a 40% margin (1 divided by 0.40) | 2.5x | Break-even sheet, 40% margin row |
On the Channels sheet, Direct holds 57.7% of this store's revenue under first click. If you sell pet products, that is where a vet's tip would land: a typed visit with no source.
On the Journeys sheet, one-touch journeys carry 79.5% of revenue and took 0.5 days to buy. For that revenue, first click and last click name the same visit.
The Break-even sheet adds a yardstick. At a 40% margin, break-even ROAS is 2.5x, because 1 divided by 0.40 is 2.5, the Break-even sheet says. That is arithmetic, not this store's ROAS: the export holds no spend.
Here is why the yardstick matters for first click. For illustration, say a creator campaign for a puppy food costs €1,000 and the first orders it opens bring €2,000. Say you judge it on those first orders alone: 2.0x, under the 2.5x line.
If the same buyers reorder €1,500 more within the year, GA4's first-user view files that under the creator too, and the campaign reads 3.5x. Shopify's per-order first click hands each reorder to whatever brought it back, so there the creator never gets past its first orders.
What changes for a pet store?
- Two first clicks answer two questions. Shopify's per-order first click shows what restarted each order. GA4's first-user view shows who found the customer in the first place. Judge reminders on the first and acquisition on the second.
- Slow reorders reset Shopify anyway. Shopify's help says the first interaction resets when a visitor buys nothing within 30 days of a session. If a big bag lasts longer than that, a visit between orders may already be forgotten.
- Seasonal repeats look like strangers. Flea treatments and winter coats come back once a year. Shopify credits whatever brought the buyer back this season, while GA4 still credits the original introducer if it recognises the buyer.
- Partners need links of their own. Shopify's Campaigns can give each influencer a link with custom UTM parameters. It makes short links and QR codes too, so the same works for a vet, a breeder or a grooming salon.
What to do this week
- Read GA4's first-user revenue over a full year. In Reports > Acquisition > User acquisition, choose First user default channel group and set the date range to the past year. Pass: the channels that bring in new owners also hold a fair share of Total revenue. Fail: Direct dominates the first-user rows, so introductions arrive untagged; start with step 3.
- Compare Shopify's First click with Last non-direct click. In Analytics > Reports, filter the Category to Marketing, open Performance by referring channel and select both models in the Attribution menu. Pass: reminder channels such as email gain under Last non-direct click, which is your reorder engine at work. Fail: the two views barely differ, so most orders are one-visit journeys.
- Give each partner a tagged link. In Shopify admin, go to Growth > Campaigns > Create campaign. Add a shareable link per vet, breeder or groomer, each with its own UTM parameters. Pass: a test scan or click lands with the utm_ parameters in the address bar. Fail: they are missing, so GA4 will file those first visits as Direct.
Check the homework. Your GA4 Attribution paths export already holds the evidence. Causality Engine reads that one file and shows what each channel caused next to what last-click gave it, in 1 to 2 minutes, for €99 once (excluding VAT), refundable within 30 days. Check the homework

Frequently asked questions
Does first click credit the channel that found a repeat customer?
In GA4's User acquisition report, yes: revenue stays with the channel that first brought that user, as long as GA4 recognises them. In Shopify, no: after each order, the next referrer becomes the first interaction for the next order. How do I track recommendations from vets or breeders?
Give each partner a link with its own UTM tags, such as utm_source with their name and utm_medium=referral. GA4 files the referral medium under its Referral channel, and the first visit through that link becomes the user's first-user source.Should a pet store judge its ads on first click or last click?
Use each for its own job. First click shows which channels bring in new customers; last click shows what brings them back to order. Before you cut either, test it: a channel can win credit under a model without causing the sale.
