How to check engage-through attribution in Meta Ads Manager
Find the ad sets that use engage-through, then use Compare attribution settings to put 1-day Engagement beside click and view results. Learn how Results adds them up, check the video rule, and look for the same buyers under Direct in GA4 and on Shopify.

To check engage-through attribution, first find which ad sets use it in the Attribution setting column. Then use Compare attribution settings to put 1-day Engagement next to click and view results. If an ad set also counts view-through, its Results column leaves engagement out. In GA4, these buyers usually turn up under Direct or search.
Engage-through is one column in a report full of them. The steps below find where it is switched on, how much it carries, and where its buyers turn up in GA4 and Shopify.
Open Ads Manager, GA4 and your Shopify admin in three tabs. Meta's menus have menus, so pour a coffee first.
Step by step
- Find the ad sets that count engagement. Meta sets attribution per ad set, so one campaign can mix rules. Add the Attribution setting column, then open the campaign to read it for each ad set. Menu path: Ads Manager > Columns dropdown next to View Setup > Customize columns > search Attribution setting > Apply.
- See where the choice is made. On a new ad set, engage-through sits in the conversion section beside the click and view choices, as a 1-day option. Menu path: Ads Manager > + Create > Sales > Continue > the ad set's Conversion section > Website. Then: Show more options > Standard attribution selections > Edit > Engage-through.
- Know your Results recipe. With click-through, view-through and engage-through all on, Results adds click-through and view-through only. With click-through and engage-through alone, Results adds click-through and engagement instead. Menu path: Ads Manager > Ad sets tab > Results and Attribution setting columns.
- Size the engagement pool. Clicks (all) counts link clicks plus likes, comments, shares and clicks to expand a photo or video. Link clicks counts only the clicks that take people somewhere. The gap between them is the raw material engage-through works with. Menu path: Ads Manager > Columns > Customize columns > Clicks (all) and Link clicks > Apply.
- Line the windows up in columns. Compare attribution settings shows each window as its own column, whatever the ad set optimizes for. Add 1-day Engagement to 7-day click and 1-day view. Menu path: Ads Manager > Columns: Performance > Performance > Compare attribution settings > pick settings > conversion count > Apply.
- Choose All or First conversion on purpose. All conversions counts every purchase after the ad interaction, and First conversion counts only the first one. A regular who likes an ad and buys twice adds two under All and one under First. Menu path: the same Compare attribution settings panel, under conversion count.
- Check the video rule. For video ads, a play of 5 seconds counts as an engagement, or 97% of a shorter video. Meta's setup page says 1-day engagement will not show in reporting for campaigns without video assets. Non-skippable Facebook in-stream video ads cannot use engage-through at all. Menu path: Ads Manager > Ads tab > each ad's creative.
- Find the buyers in GA4. A like or a save brings no visit, so GA4 files the purchase under the visit that came next. A saved link or a typed address is Direct, and a search lands in a search channel. Menu path: GA4 > Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition.
- Pull the one-visit purchase paths. Filter the paths report to a path length of 1 touchpoint and look at Direct. That pool is where engaged buyers who come straight back would sit. Menu path: GA4 > Advertising > Key event attribution paths, under Key events > Path length: equal to 1 > Apply.
- Hold the busy days against Shopify. Pick the days when 1-day Engagement peaked and open the same dates in Shopify. If orders stayed flat while the column jumped, it was describing buyers, not adding them. Menu path: Shopify admin > Growth > View channel report, then set the dates.
A worked example
For illustration, take one ad set and one week, with round numbers made up for the purpose.
| For illustration: one ad set, one week | Count |
|---|---|
| Clicks (all) | 2,000 |
| Link clicks | 500 |
| Other clicks: likes, comments, shares, expands | 1,500 |
| Purchases under 7-day click | 30 |
| Purchases under 1-day Engagement, All conversions | 12 |
| Purchases under 1-day Engagement, First conversion | 10 |
In this worked example, three clicks in four were not link clicks. Each of those opened a 1-day engage-through window for that person. Two engaged buyers bought twice inside theirs, which is why All shows more than First. In this worked example, none of the 12 engagement purchases reaches GA4's Paid Social row. None of them arrived through an ad link.
In this worked example, the 30 click purchases are the part GA4 can cross-check, because each followed a link click. In the worked example, the 12 engagement purchases are the part only a test can check. Report them on two lines, never as one sum, and name the conversion count you used.
Now the GA4 side, from one store's real export. Store A is one store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026, holding shares of revenue only. On its Journeys sheet, 3,656 of 3,670 distinct path sequences run to 2 or more touches. Those are sequences, not purchases. Yet journeys with one touch hold 79.5% of revenue on the Journeys sheet.
So step 9's filter is no corner case. In this store, most of the money sits in one-visit journeys, the exact place an engaged buyer who comes straight back would land. GA4 shows the visit. It cannot show the like that came before it.
What to check when the report looks wrong
- The 1-day Engagement column stays empty. Start with step 7: Meta says it will not show for campaigns without video assets. Then check step 1, and remember that some accounts still run the older engage-through while Meta rolls the change out.
- Results dropped after March 2026 while engagement climbed. That is the relabel at work: purchases after likes, saves and shares left click-through for engage-through. Compare months on the same side of the switch.
- A video ad out-engages a static one. A short play counts as an engagement, so video earns this credit more easily. Judge both formats on link clicks and 7-day click before you crown a winner.
- Meta shows engagement purchases and GA4 shows no Paid Social. That is expected, not a tracking fault. Tag your ad links anyway, so the link-click half of Meta's results gets a Paid Social row.
- Engagement jumps after a creative swap. A new video that holds attention for a few seconds collects more engagements by design. Check that link clicks and 7-day click moved too before you call it a better ad.
- Ads Manager and a scheduled report disagree. Check that both use the same attribution settings and conversion count. Ads Reporting has its own route: Customize, then Options, then Select attribution settings.
What to do this week
- Run step 5 on your three biggest campaigns. Pass: 1-day Engagement stays a minor column beside 7-day click. Fail: it rivals 7-day click, so those campaigns lean on engagement credit.
- Put Clicks (all) and Link clicks side by side for last month. Pass: link clicks make up most clicks on your sales ads. Fail: most clicks are likes, shares and expands, so engage-through will steer more of your reporting than you think.
- Check Shopify on the five days engagement peaked. Pass: orders rose on those days too. Fail: orders stayed flat, so the engagement column relabels buyers rather than adding them.
Check the homework. Your GA4 Attribution paths export already holds the evidence. Causality Engine reads that one file and shows what each channel caused next to what last-click gave it, in 1 to 2 minutes, for €99 once (excluding VAT), refundable within 30 days. Check the homework

Frequently asked questions
Why is my 1-day Engagement column empty?
Often because the campaign has no video assets: Meta's setup page says 1-day engagement will not show in reporting without them. Also check that the ad set includes engage-through, and that its ads are not non-skippable Facebook in-stream video.Which placements can earn engage-through credit?
All placements except one, says Meta's setup page: non-skippable Facebook in-stream video ads cannot use it. Meta's own example is an Instagram Stories video ad that someone saves or plays for more than 5 seconds, then converts from the next day.Can engage-through count one buyer twice?
Under All conversions, yes: every measurable purchase after the ad interaction counts. Pick First conversion in Compare attribution settings to count only the first one, and use the same choice in every report you compare.
