Is branded search worth paying for in fashion?

If you sell fashion, branded search is more often worth some spend. Stockists and resellers may bid on your name, and drops send shoppers searching for one item. Check who shows up on your name before you pay full price or pause.

If you sell fashion, branded search is usually worth some spend when stockists, resellers or rivals show up on your name. Brand searches also spike around drops and sales. If nobody else appears and you rank first, many brand clicks would reach you free, so test before paying full price.

If you sell fashion and apparel

If you sell clothes, your name may live in other people's shops. Stockists, multi-brand boutiques and resale sites can carry your label. Google's trademark policy does not restrict trademarks used as keywords. A reseller may even use your name in ad text if its page sells your products. So the top of the page for your own name may not be yours.

Your searches also come in waves. A drop, a restock or a sale sends people to search your name plus one item. Some want the piece more than the label, and a stockist's Shopping ad can catch them first, possibly with your own product photo.

What one store's export shows

One store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026. It holds shares of revenue only: no ad spend, no order counts. Nothing in it says what the store sells.

What the export showsShare of revenueSource cell
Journeys with 2 to 3 touches (12.5 days to buy)12.2%Journeys sheet, 2-3 touches row
Journeys with 4 to 9 touches (16.9 days to buy)5.4%Journeys sheet, 4-9 touches row
Journeys with 10 or more touches (16.0 days to buy)3.0%Journeys sheet, 10+ touches row

On the Journeys sheet, journeys of 2 to 3 touches hold 12.2% of revenue and take 12.5 days to buy. Journeys of 4 to 9 touches hold 5.4% of revenue on the Journeys sheet and take 16.9 days. Add the 3.0% from journeys of 10 or more touches and that store's multi-touch journeys hold 20.6% of revenue, about a fifth.

That is the shape of browsing: look, leave, come back. If you sell clothes, the trip back often starts with a search for your name. Whatever sits first on that results page gets the last click, and with it the credit.

The export holds no spend and no ad figures, so it cannot say whether that store ran brand ads, or what they caused. It is one store, not a benchmark for fashion.

What changes for a fashion store?

  • Resellers on your name are a reason to pay. If a stockist's ad sits above your free listing, your own ad can keep the sale on your site at full margin. Auction insights shows which domains share your brand auctions.
  • Shopping ads need their own look. Google's paid and organic report counts text ads only, not Shopping ads. If brand-plus-item searches show product listings from stockists, judge those separately from your text ads.
  • Performance Max may already bid on your name. Its brand exclusions come with a checkbox that still allows Shopping ads on searches for excluded brands. You can stop paying for brand text ads and keep your product listings.
  • Drops and sales spoil a pause test. Brand searches swing with your calendar, so a pause during a launch mixes the ads' effect with the drop's. Test in calm weeks, and keep brand ads on while a launch pulls resellers onto your name.

What to do this week

  1. Look for stockists in Auction insights. Go to Campaigns, tick your brand campaign and select Auction insights. Pass: no stockist or reseller domains appear, so a pause test is low risk. Fail: they appear often, so test carefully and keep defending your bestsellers.
  2. Find who pays for your name plus a product. Open Search terms under Insights and reports, then filter for your brand. Pass: brand-plus-item searches sit in one campaign you chose. Fail: Performance Max and Shopping buy them in several places, so fence them with brand exclusions.
  3. Mark your calm weeks in Shopify. Open the Total sales over time report, group it by week, and mark every drop and sale. Pass: you find a stretch of ordinary weeks for a test. Fail: every week has an event, so test by region while the calendar runs everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

  • Should I show Shopping ads on searches for my own brand?
Often yes, if stockists show theirs. Performance Max brand exclusions come with a checkbox that still allows Shopping ads on searches for excluded brands. That lets you stop paying for brand text ads while your product listings keep their place.
  • Should I pause brand ads during a drop?
Usually not. Brand searches swing around drops and sales, so a pause then mixes the ads' effect with the calendar's. Run any pause test in ordinary weeks, when the only thing that changes is whether the brand ad shows.
  • Why does my brand campaign get credit for sales my social posts made?
Because the search often ends a journey another channel started. If a shopper sees a look in a social feed, then searches your name to buy, last click gives the brand ad the sale. Your GA4 paths show which channels open those journeys.
