How do I measure organic search value in health and beauty?

If you sell health and beauty products, measure organic search on non-brand searches: ingredients, concerns and product types. Brand searches often follow a creator video, an ad or a reorder, so they largely collect demand made elsewhere. Count new customers who arrive on non-brand pages, not total organic revenue.
If you sell health and beauty products
If you sell skincare, haircare, cosmetics or supplements, shoppers may search the problem before the brand. They type an ingredient, a skin concern or a routine step. If your guides and category pages rank for those words, organic search does discovery work you would otherwise buy with ads.
If creators and short videos drive your launches, the search comes later and carries your name. That click lands in Organic Search, but the video did the persuading. If your products run out and get reordered, many reorders can arrive the same way: a quick brand search, then checkout. Count those as SEO value and you count creator spend and retention twice.
What one store's data shows
One store's anonymised GA4 export, 1 January 2024 to 21 August 2026. It holds shares of revenue only: no ad spend, no order counts. The export does not say what the store sells, so treat it as one store, not as a picture of beauty retail.
| What the export shows | Share of revenue | Source cell |
|---|---|---|
| Organic Video, in all three views | 0.0% | Channels sheet, Organic Video row |
| Journeys with 1 touch (0.5 days to buy) | 79.5% | Journeys sheet, 1 touch row |
| Journeys with 4 to 9 touches (16.9 days to buy) | 5.4% | Journeys sheet, 4-9 touches row |
Organic Video shows 0.0% in all three views of that store's Channels sheet. If shoppers watch a video and search your name later, the sale lands on search and video shows zero. If you pay creators, check your own export for the same pattern.
One-touch journeys carry 79.5% of revenue in the Journeys sheet, at 0.5 days to buy. A customer reordering a serum through a quick brand search fits that pattern. So does a new buyer who already knew what they wanted. The export cannot tell them apart.
Journeys with 4 to 9 touches took 16.9 days to buy in that store's Journeys sheet and hold 5.4% of revenue. If you sell products people research, such as actives or supplements, non-brand searches can sit early in journeys like those. Last click then gives them nothing.
What the export cannot show is which searches named the brand. It holds no queries, so that split has to come from Search Console.
What changes for a health and beauty store?
Split by brand, then by need. Search Console's branded filter separates searches with your name from the rest. Inside the non-branded group, add a Queries containing filter for each ingredient or concern you sell against. That shows which needs your pages actually win.
Value new customers, not reorders. A reorder that arrives through brand search is retention, not SEO. Shopify's Customer cohort analysis lists the top marketing channels that brought each cohort's customers. If search ranks among them for recent cohorts, it is finding new people.
Read brand searches as a creator scoreboard. If branded clicks rise in the weeks after a creator push, credit the creators, not your rankings. Search Console's date comparison puts those weeks next to the same weeks before.
What to do this week
- Measure the brand share. In Search Console, open Performance, click the filter bar, select the Query filter and choose Branded, then Non-branded. Pass: non-brand clicks are a solid share of the total, so SEO is finding new shoppers. Fail: nearly every click is branded, so organic search mostly collects demand made elsewhere.
- Check one ingredient. In Search Console, click + Add filter, choose Queries, then Queries containing, and enter an ingredient you sell. Open the Pages tab. Pass: the clicks land on the guide or category page you built for it. Fail: they scatter across product pages, so no page owns that search yet.
- See which channels bring new cohorts. In Shopify admin, go to Analytics > Reports, set the Category filter to Customers and open Customer cohort analysis. Then open a recent cohort's details. Pass: search sits among its top marketing channels. Fail: search shows up only for older cohorts, so it now mostly serves people who already know you.
Check the homework. Your GA4 Attribution paths export already holds the evidence. Causality Engine reads that one file and shows what each channel caused next to what last-click gave it, in 1 to 2 minutes, for €99 once (excluding VAT), refundable within 30 days. Check the homework

Frequently asked questions
Do ingredient guides bring sales for a skincare store?
They can, if they rank for non-brand searches and send readers on to products. Check the guide in GA4's Landing page report, which shows sessions, key events and revenue for the first page of each visit. A guide with clicks but no revenue may still start journeys others finish.Should a beauty brand count reorder searches as SEO value?
No. A customer searching your name to buy again is retention at work, not SEO. Credit reorders to whatever keeps customers coming back, and judge SEO on searches from people who have never bought from you.How do I see if creator videos lift brand searches?
Compare branded clicks in Search Console for the weeks after a creator push with the same weeks before it, using the date comparison. A rise that fades as the posts age points at the creators. Keep launches and sales out of those weeks.
