Shopify themes and tracking: what can break

A theme controls the storefront, not the checkout, so tracking breaks where code assumed it could run at checkout: additional scripts went view-only on 28 August 2025. Test one order before and after every theme or app change.

No Shopify theme is "tracking compatible" on its own, because a theme renders the storefront and not the checkout. Shopify's layout documentation says theme.liquid is a general layout for non-checkout pages, and the checkout layout is available to Plus stores only. What breaks tracking now is code that assumed it could run at checkout: additional scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages became view-only on 28 August 2025, and 26 August 2026 was the deadline for non-Plus stores to move those pages.

What does a theme control, and what doesn't it?

Shopify's Layouts page says general layouts "can apply to all non-checkout pages", with theme.liquid as the default, and that the checkout layout type is "available to Shopify Plus merchants only". The same page says content_for_header must stay in theme.liquid because it loads the scripts Shopify needs "for features like hCaptcha, Shopify apps, and more", and that you shouldn't modify it. If storefront events vanish after a theme edit, that line is the first place to look. On Plus, Shopify's checkout.liquid page says checkout.liquid is now unsupported for the Information, Shipping and Payment steps.

Pixels sit outside the theme. Shopify's pixels overview says they "automatically load on the Storefront, Checkout, Thank you page, and Order status page", and its custom pixels page says you can track customer events "without having to modify your theme code". An event that comes from a pixel should look the same under any theme. An event that changes when you preview another theme came from theme code.

What changed in checkout, and when?

Four dated changes to check against your own setup:

  1. 24 April 2025, from Google. Google's Shopify reference says purchase values sent by the Google & YouTube app are now worked out as subtotal minus discounts, starting on that date. The same page says the value excludes shipping charges and taxes.
  2. 30 April 2025, from Shopify. Shopify's changelog says the subtotalPrice.amount value in its web pixel checkout events now includes order-level discounts, where before it covered product-level discounts only. It affects checkout_completed on the new Thank you page and the other checkout events the entry lists.
  3. 28 August 2025. Shopify's developer documentation says checkout.liquid and additional scripts were sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on that date. Shopify Help says the additional scripts section in Checkout settings has been view-only since then.
  4. 26 August 2026. Shopify Help says this was the deadline for non-Plus stores to upgrade those two pages, and the developer documentation says script tags on them are sunset for non-Plus stores on the same date. The replacement route in the upgrade guide is web pixels, with app pixels for tracking customer events.

Google adds two warnings. Its FAQ says Google tags installed through checkout.liquid or Order Confirmation "Additional Scripts" break when the pages are upgraded unless you migrate them, and that running Google tags inside Shopify's custom pixel feature "is not a supported feature". Shopify's own page says custom pixels are unsupported by Shopify. No source cited here measures how many stores lost data, so this page gives no loss rate.

Shopify runs app pixels and custom pixels in a sandbox. Its pixels overview says a sandbox can't detect events gathered by DOM scraping on its own, and that pixels Google Tag Manager loads "still run within the Shopify sandbox", so the same limits apply. In markets that require consent, usually the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom according to Shopify, web pixels run only when visitors have given the permissions set in the pixel. A missing event can be a consent decision and not a bug.

How do you test a theme change with one order?

Run this before and after every theme publish or app install:

  1. List where tracking code lives. Check theme.liquid and the other theme files, the view-only Additional scripts section, and the app pixels and custom pixels under Settings > Customer events. Google's setup page tells you to check for duplicate tags when conversions sit in both the Google & YouTube app and a storefront or custom pixel, and to remove legacy tags "to prevent duplicate measurement".
  2. Step through checkout with a test order. Shopify's custom pixel testing page gives the sequence for its Pixel Helper: open a page, click a product, add it to the cart, go to checkout, enter shipping details, complete checkout. Each step should show its event: page_viewed, product_viewed, product_added_to_cart, checkout_started, checkout_shipping_info_submitted, checkout_completed.
  3. Read the same order in GA4 DebugView. Tag Assistant or preview mode turns on debug mode for your device. DebugView shows no events when consent mode is on and analytics cookies weren't accepted, so accept them for this test.
  4. Preview the candidate theme and repeat the last two steps. An event that appears under one theme and not the other came from theme code.

Pass: each step fires its event once, the purchase carries the order's ID, its value matches the order's subtotal after discounts, and the events are identical under both themes. Fail: no purchase, two purchases, a value that doesn't match the order, or an event that changes with the theme. Shopify says test orders and simulated transactions "don't display in your payouts or reports", so compare against the order in your admin, not a report.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do I need to change my Shopify theme to keep tracking working?
Not for checkout events. Shopify says pixels load on the storefront, checkout, Thank you and Order status pages, and custom pixels need no theme code change. Theme code still matters for storefront-only tags, so retest after theme edits.
  • Why did my purchase value in Google Ads or GA4 drop around April 2025?
Google says purchase values from its Shopify app take discounts into account from 24 April 2025. Shopify's changelog dated 30 April 2025 says checkout events now include order-level discounts in subtotalPrice.amount. Google says stores with order-level discounts will likely see lower purchase values.
  • Does Google Tag Manager work on Shopify's new checkout?
Google says the new Shopify checkout limits third-party tag managers like Google Tag Manager, and that running Google tags inside Shopify's custom pixel feature is not supported. Google recommends its Google & YouTube app for Shopify measurement.
