What each term means

Online sales

The total charged at checkout in a month, shipping and tax included: card fees are taken on the amount charged.

Plan price

What your Shopify plan costs a month, as billed. Paying yearly is cheaper per month.

Card rate

The percentage part of your Shopify Payments online card rate.

Fixed fee per order

The flat part of the card rate, charged on every order whatever its size.

Other provider's share

The share of sales paid through a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments. With Shopify Payments activated, PayPal and manual payments do not count.

Third-party transaction fee

Shopify's own fee on those sales, set by your plan.

Frequently asked questions

• What fees does Shopify charge?

  Three kinds. The plan, a monthly subscription. Card processing through Shopify Payments: a percentage of each payment plus a fixed fee per order. And a third-party transaction fee on sales paid through another payment provider. Apps, themes and domains cost extra and are not in this calculator.
• When does the third-party transaction fee apply?

  Shopify's Help Center says it applies on all third-party and alternate payment gateways, even when Shopify Payments is activated; with Shopify Payments activated, PayPal and manual payments are excluded, and on Shopify Plus the fee might be waived depending on your location. The rate depends on your plan: on 26 September 2026 the pricing pages listed 2%, 1%, 0.6% and 0.2% for Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus.
• Why is my effective rate higher than my card rate?

  Three reasons. The fixed fee per order weighs more on small orders. The plan price is spread over your sales, so it weighs more when sales are low. And international, Amex and premium cards are charged above the standard rate, so a blend of cards costs more than the headline rate.
• Do Shopify's fees differ by country?

  Yes. On 26 September 2026 the Basic plan's online card rate was 2.9% + 30¢ on the US page and 2% + €0.25 on the Ireland page, and Shopify says Shopify Payments is available only in certain countries. The rates in your Shopify admin are the ones that apply to you.
• Does a higher plan save money?

  Only above a certain volume. A higher plan costs more a month but carries a lower card rate and third-party fee. Run the calculator once per plan with your own sales and orders: the plan with the lowest total at your volume is the cheaper one for you.
• What does this calculator leave out?

  Apps, themes and domains, chargeback fees, currency conversion, in-person card rates, VAT on Shopify's invoices, and the other payment provider's own processing fees on the sales it handles.
